Ensuring the safety, reliability, and performance of complex rehab technology is essential for independence and quality of life. Use this checklist for regular maintenance inspections.

1. Seating & Positioning Systems

  • Seat Belts / Pelvic Belts: Check that buckles snap securely and straps show no signs of fraying or tearing.

  • Cushions & Backrests: Inspect for bottoming out, tears, or moisture. Ensure the cushion is properly oriented (front-to-back, top-to-bottom).

  • Lateral Supports / Headrests: Verify all hardware is tight and pads are correctly aligned to prevent pressure injuries.

  • Skin Inspection: Ensure no metal or hard plastic components are exposed or rubbing against the user.

2. Wheels, Tires, & Casters

  • Tire Pressure: For pneumatic tires, check that inflation matches the PSI recommended on the tire sidewall.

  • Tread Wear: Inspect for bald spots, cracks, or embedded debris (glass, thorns).

  • Caster Flutter: Spin the front casters to ensure they rotate freely without excessive wobbling or dragging.

  • Axles: Check that quick-release axles snap securely into place and wheels do not play or shake on the axle.

3. Power & Electrical Systems (For Power Wheelchairs & Scooters)

  • Battery Connections: Ensure terminals are clean, free of corrosion, and tightly connected.

  • Joystick & Controller: Inspect the joystick boot for rips or tears that could let moisture in. Verify that the controller responds accurately and stops immediately when released.

  • Wiring Harnesses: Look for pinched, frayed, or exposed wires, especially around folding or tilting mechanisms.

  • Charging Port: Clean out any dust or lint from the charging port before plugging it in.

4. Brakes & Drive Mechanisms

  • Wheel Locks (Manual Chairs): Engage the brakes to ensure they firmly grip the tire and prevent the chair from rolling.

  • Electromagnetic Brakes (Power Chairs): Test that the automatic brakes engage immediately when the joystick returns to the neutral position.

  • Freewheel Levers: Ensure the levers are fully engaged in "Drive" mode and not accidentally left in "Push/Freewheel" mode.

5. Frame & Hardware

  • Fasteners: Inspect all nuts, bolts, and screws. Tighten any that feel loose, but avoid overtightening pivot points.

  • Folding Mechanisms: For folding chairs, ensure the cross-braces open fully and lock into place securely.

  • Footrests & Armrests: Verify that flip-up, swing-away, or elevating features lock properly and do not drag on the ground.

Quick Reference: Maintenance Schedule

Component Daily Weekly Monthly
